Cornwall Alternative School (CAS) Program
The students of CAS are those kids who are unable the thrive or succeed in regular high schools because of various dysfunctions including gang activities, anti-social behaviors, petty crimes, non-school attendance, drugs and alcohol abuse, and various mental health issues.
These kids were already kicked out of regular high schools. Left without intervention and a high school education, they are more likely to continue to participate in those activities that could put them in conflict with the law and deprive them of the ability to contribute positively to their communities.
CAS relaxed pace of learning, the high teacher to student ratio and the caring attitude of teachers, the availability of Social/other mental health workers help these kids thrive. AWE assists CAS by providing laptops so the kids have the computer access they need to learn, research and complete their assignments. AWE also helps in providing food for the students. The role of AWE in encouraging these kids to remain and complete high school is very, very important. It benefits not just the kids who participate, but all residents of Regina and Saskatchewan. We encourage the kids to dream big, envision a life they could have with a good education and begin to explore the classes and grades they would need to get there.
Teacher and a Student Making Soup at a Nutrition Class
“We don’t always have food at home. Most of the time I didn’t eat breakfast before school and had no money to buy lunch at my former high school. I was always hungry and tired and did not feel like learning or even going to school. I also didn’t have any computer for homework, so there was really no point of going to school. Since I came here (CAS), things have changed. The van picks me up in the morning and breakfast and lunch are provided here at school. We also have these laptops for our homework. The teachers are very nice, and really care. It’s a lot easier to go to school here.
Thank you for things you provide for us”
